The Passion Cycle

BAWAG Foundation, 2003

Sam Taylor-Johnson (formerly Taylor-Wood)’s Passion Cycle┬áseries was inspired by shunga or spring pictures, Japanese woodcuts by 19th-century masters who not only portrayed kabuki actors, geishas, sumo wrestlers, and scenes from everyday life but also depicted sexuality in a frank and unvarnished manner.┬áThe series consists of twenty-five precious little light boxes with extremely explicit shots of a couple making love in various positions. It is documented in this catalogue published for a Taylor-Johnson exhibition at the BAWAG Foundation, Austria.
